Welcome

The Wirral Fencing Club meets at the Oval Sports and Recreation Centre, Bebington, Wirral; famous location of the film "Chariots of Fire". Club Night: Thursdays, 08:00 - 10:00 pm Costs: £5 a night, and if you have never fenced before we will give you the first night free! The club will provide all the gear you need for fencing, just come in long trousers and preferably trainers. We train in foil, epee and sabre, so you can pick the weapon that suits you best. On the first Thursday of every month we hold a handicap foil fencing competition instead of the normal training protocol. Scroll down to contact us.

Safe

It is a safe sport with any injuries rarely being beyond sprains and strains and the odd bruise.

Fun

Fencing is enjoyable at whatever level you wish to participate.

Historic

Sword fighting is thousands of years old as is the sport of sword play.

Athletic

The sport of fencing is an athletic, skilful and tactical sport but can be enjoyed at all levels.

About Wirral Fencing

Who we are and what we do

WFC was established in 1992 and has been based continuously at The Oval Sports Centre. It is a member's club run by and for its members; no fees are paid to coaches or club officers. The club welcomes both experienced fencers and beginners with no prior experience of fencing, male and female, but for safety reasons we have a minimum age requirement of 13. We can provide all the necessary equipment to get started, beginners need only to ensure that they have strong trousers and wear suitable footwear (trainers). For beginners their first visit is free of charge. Should beginners then wish to continue fencing with us we ask them to join as members. A typical club night consists of class and individual coaching and free fencing. All coaching is free of charge. Once a month we have a light hearted, handicap competition for foil fencers. Although primarily a foil club we are able to offer coaching for both epee and sabre as well. Senior coach Alan Howell has more than 50 years experience of fencing as competitor and coach and hold the British Fencing Association's level 4 out of 5 foil coaching certificate. Assistant coach Peter Lloyd holds a level 3 BF foil coaching certificate. Members fence for enjoyment and some participate in open tournaments around the country, something the club encourages. Members have achieved success at adult regional and youth international levels but it is for individuals to decide how ambitious they want to be - elite or hobby/fun fencers are equally welcome. Above all else, we at WFC want members to enjoy their fencing at whatever level they wish to participate.
